doweshowbellyad=0; Celebration Time: (From left ) Momo, Abir, Rimjhim, Goutam, Sumit, Soma, Mishti, Ananya, Suman and Sarbari on the sets of Khuje Berai Kachher Manush.Of late, opulent marriages have become an important part of the storyline of most Bengali serials. CT takes a look Thanks to Ekta Kapoor’s K-series, opulent marriages on the small screen is no new affair.
Now it looks like Bengali serials too are heading the same way. Sanaai, Rani Kahini, Khela, Ekdin Pratidin — to name a few — have all showcased larger than life weddings. And now it’s the turn of Khuje Berai Kachher Manush directed by Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha. Ayan (Abir) and Gargi (Rimjhim), are finally tying the knot. At the sets of the serial, excitement rules supreme. And thanks to the storyline, there’s enough intrigue and play of emotions.
Kushal, who had saved Rimjhim had fallen in love with her while Pauli had been in love with Abir. So, while the wedding comes as a boon for Ayan and Gargi, it is a moment of painful reckoning for both Kushal and Pauli. Says director Sudeshna Roy, “The biyer sequence is of great importance. It is not only about just uniting the two lovers. A number of questions against several other ondho bishwas have been raised as well. In the serial, Gargi is a manglik. Ayan’s mother (that’s me) is a social worker yet when it comes to her son, she insists on first getting Gargi married to a tree. But the son resists the act with full support of his father.” Do we get a hint of the Junior B act in Lage Raho Munna Bhai here? This apart, the marriage sequence has also addressed another important issue, that of kanya sampradaan. Going by tradition, it is usually the father who does the sampradaan. In his absence, the girl’s mama or brother can do the honours. But here, the duty is performed by Gargi’s mother. “Ma meyer biye diley ki korey omongol hoi? But patriarchal norms of the society prevent the mother from doing the sampradaan. I have often been told that I make serials that talk about women empowerment and this serial is no different. Due to various reasons, Gargi’s father is unable to attend the ceremony and in his absence, Gargi asks her mother to do the sampradaan. And she gets the support of everyone attending the wedding,” adds Sudeshna Roy before rushing to can another shot. On Tuesday, the serial will be completing its 200th episode and that calls for double celebrations in the Kachher Manush camp.
